OTW 2021 Fall Run Issue Cover Page!
Short story behind the cover page image for New York issue cover page.

Thank you the the editors at On The Water Magazine for choosing one of my pictures for their 2021 New York Fall Run Issue cover page. I'm stoked.
The September/October cover page features something we anglers in the northeast look forward to seeing all season, an albie and bluefish blitz at the Montauk lighthouse in the fall. A blitz is what we call when game fish round up bait and feed on them in a frenzy. These can last a few seconds and sometimes go on all day.
I remember taking this picture clearly because this was one of the occasions when I wanted to reach for my fishing rod instead of the camera, but I'm glad I chose the camera.
The picture was taken in early October when albies and bluefish were feeding in large schools of rain bait, small anchovies that run along the coast line on their southernly migration and are ambushed by striped bass, bluefish and false albacore.
The cover page is a crop of the original picture in landscape mode. It gives a better idea of the intensity of the blitz but the actual conditions were even better. Albies and blues feeding as far as you can see, best part they did not discriminate and would take whatever fly or plug you put near them.
If you have yet to fish Montauk in the fall, I recommend watching the following video.
Hoping for a great fall season on Long Island. Tight lines and best wishes for the season!
