2023 Fishing Season Starts Early!
Fish arrive on Long Island South Shore

South Shore Lights Up, LINY
This past weekend we were happy to find schools of striped bass along the mid to western south shore of long island. The fish have arrived earlier than usual and with warmer temperatures and light winds, conditions were perfect to target these fish on the fly.
Most of the stripers we caught were small fish with a few larger ones. The bass and shad ate clousers and smaller deciver in sizes 1 and 1/0 and while I used mostly olive dark, the color didn't really seem to matter. On Sunday we ran into a school of large shad, they were so big we thought we had small stripers until we'd see them performing acrobatics.
Bait fish is tight to the beach, you can see it spray from time to time and most of the strikes took place between 20 - 40ft from shore, so relatively short casts produced well. If you are new to fishing the surf, try this, let your fly sync close to the bottom and begin a steady retrieve, they strike low and close to shore.
If you're still wondering about getting out, this is it, good time to get your gear ready, check leaders, knots, fly box and hit the surf, always making sure conditions are safe.
Tight lines and best of luck!
Sergio
